Off the Grid

Young Designer Gardens

Themed around off-grid living within a forest setting, this garden shows how an individual can live within nature in a self-sustaining way.

The space includes a sunken, luxury lodge, surrounded by chopped-log retaining walls. Logs have also been  used to make a bike rack, while a table is fashioned from a tree stump. The whole area even smells of the forest. Sandstone steps and paving nod to the natural sandstone found within the local area.

Magnificent pine and birch trees create height and scale while retaining the natural theme of the garden and forming a light, airy canopy. Modern elements, such as the cantilevered outdoor shower, which is controlled by Bluetooth, tie in with the modern design of the lodge.

The garden features a limited planting scheme in line with the informal, woodland tone, with a colour scheme of textural greens including ferns, nettles, and bracken, and flashes of royal purple from herbaceous plants such as Digitalis purpurea. Corten steel planters are filled with edibles such as pak choi and rocket.

Key plants: ferns, pines, birch, pak choi, rocket
