Vigorous, suckering old rose about 2.5m tall, used in the past as a rootstock and so frequently found in old gardens. Dark stems are almost thornless and bear coarse dark green leaves. Trusses of fully double very fragrant magenta blooms fade to lilac-pink, and are once flowering in midsummer; introduced in 1845

How to Grow

Cultivation

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or part shade, suitable for north facing walls. Mulch with well-rotted organic matter in late winter or early spring, and for best flowering apply a general rose or shrub fertiliser in early spring and again in early summer. See rose cultivation

Propagate by hardwood cuttings in autumn, softwood cuttings (under glass) in spring or summer or by chip budding in summer
