Small compact shrub about 1.2m tall, with prickly, slender, arching chestnut-brown stems and small bright green fern-like leaves. Buttercup-size blooms of deep, rich yellow have prominent stamens, produced along the branches during late spring, followed by small globular reddish-brown fruits (hips)

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, in a warm sheltered position. Best suited to southern counties and inner city locations, can be grown in a container and overwintered in a greenhouse in colder areas. Propagate by softwood cuttings in early to mid spring, hardwood cuttings in late summer to autumn or by chip budding in summer; propagate by seed; species roses can be propagated by seed but need stratification and germination may take two seasons
