A small, freely-suckering large shrub, introduced in 1899, to about 150cm in height, forming thickets of prickly stems with neat, fern-like, dark green foliage. Large, single, fragrant pale yellow flowers with prominent yellow stamen appear in early May, turning to creamy-white as they mature. Spherical black fruits (hips) appear in the autumn

Cultivation

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun. mulch with well-rotted organic matter in late winter or early spring, and for best flowering apply a general rose or shrub fertiliser in early spring and again in early summer.
