Vigorous, spreading rose about 1.5m tall, armed with very thorny stems and plentiful mid-green, corrugated leaves - makes an impenetrable hedge. Strongly fragrant, semi-double, white blooms about 10cm across open almost flat, from long pointed buds, produced in small clusters, repeat-flowering through summer and into autumn, occasional orange-red fruits (hips) follow; introduced in 1887

How to Grow

Cultivation

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or part shade. Mulch with well-rotted organic matter in late winter or early spring, and for best flowering apply a general rose or shrub fertiliser in early spring and again in early summer. See rose cultivation

Propagate by hardwood cuttings in autumn, softwood cuttings (under glass) in spring or summer or by chip budding in summer
