Omphalodes

RHS Genus Guide
Omphalodes is a genus of low-growing, perennial plants. Many are evergreen or semi-evergreen; some, such as Omphalodes linifolia, are annual. They are prized for their loose clouds of delicate flowers and are an excellent choice for ground cover and underplanting in shady borders.

Botanical name: Omphalodes

Common name: navelwort

Appearance

Omphalodes typically form clumps, reaching a height of about 25cm. Clusters of small, five-petalled, blue or white flowers, strongly resembling forget-me-nots, add spring colour.

Preferences

They thrive in dappled shade and prefer moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, but are not generally fussy about soil pH.

Dislikes

Omphalodes do not tolerate drought or dry soils, so avoid planting in areas with full sun if the soil is not reliably damp. They are prone to slug and snail damage.

Did you know?

The genus name derives from the Greek word ‘omphalos’, meaning ‘navel’, and refers to the shape of the seeds. The annual Omphalodes linifolia is popular as a cut flower.
