The Mediterraneo Garden

Get Started Gardens

Drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean, this garden provides an escape from the everyday whilst addressing the necessity of climate adaptation in our gardens.

Inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of Greek landscapes, it seeks to transplant their iconic features into British gardens. From the rustic allure of terracotta pots and natural limestone features, to the practicality of permeable landscaping and gravel pathways.

Every element is selected to infuse the timeless charm of the Mediterranean into this serene retreat while integrating drought tolerant plants that can adapt to the changing UK climate.

Key sustainability points

  • With the use of drought-tolerant landscaping, water retention is maximised for plant health. Natural stones covering the ground reduce sun exposure to soil, aiding moisture retention and decreasing water requirements.
  • Mediterranean-inspired drought-tolerant trees demand little watering, providing crucial shade whilst also mitigating heat in a warming environment.
  • Permeable hardscaping principles, like gravel in the paths and decorative aggregates in the planting beds, show how to maximise water retention.

Relocation and repurpose

Elements of the garden will be relocated to Crystal Palace Park as part of the Invisible Palace charity. Invisible Palace offers accessible ways for people to get involved with their local environment, heritage, and culture. Projects bring investment to the area and create social value with demonstrable benefits for people who take part, for heritage assets, and the locality. Gardening is a big part of what they do, bringing in a committed volunteering community that creates beautiful spaces for visitors to the Crystal Palace Park.
