A species rose introduced in the 1600s to about 2.5m in height, with upright growth, and chestnut brown stems bearing large, blackish thorns and bright green foliage. Large, single rich golden-yellow blooms with prominent stamens and an unusual scent are produced in early summer, then occasionally followed by red-brown fruit (hips)
